Avalon customers were delighted to attend a new ‘Lunch Club’ on 25 January at Bilton Community Centre.
The event was organised by Harrogate Supported Living Team Co-ordinator, Mel Dutka, and led by student Michelle Walton.
Michelle is studying Nutrition and Food at Leeds Trinity University. She found out about the work of The Avalon Group through a friend and volunteered to take a class as part of her degree. In Harrogate, Michelle gave a talk about nutrition, healthy eating and well-being.
Then Avalon customers made a selection of sandwiches and salads before eating lunch together.
Michelle said: “Lunch Club’s aim is to increase awareness of nutrition, how healthy eating can be achieved – even on a budget. It also brings people together in a social environment by using food. We’re happy as our first lunch has gone down really well!”
Customers were very positive about the event:
John said: “I have discovered what foods to avoid and what foods to eat in moderation. Eggs and fish are good for you. I would like to do this again.”
James said: “I’ve really enjoyed it. The food was good, thanks Mel!”
Christine said: “I liked the leaflet I was given. It has a picture of healthy foods on it.”
Susan said: “I like it. I would come again because I like to see people.”
Emma said: “I’ve enjoyed today because I have met and seen different people.”
Richard said: “Lunch is always appealing! I’ve learnt about portion control and only eat until I’m content and not full.”
Billie Jean said: “I’ve enjoyed seeing Jim, Emma and meeting Richard.”
Support Workers were also happy the event went well, and was a positive experience for customers:
Trish Farrer said: “I think it has been brilliant, everyone has got together and it has taught our customers new skills.”
Support Worker Alison Rich said: “It’s lovely to all get together and for our customers to socialise.”
