After spending the early part of his career in the motor industry, in which he became Group Director of a successful rental car company, Keith changed his career path towards supporting people with disabilities, using his experiences of volunteering and subsequently leading his local Gateway Club. He started out working for North Yorkshire County Council, providing support to people with learning difficulties by teaching them essential social and daily living skills.
The success of his work helped him to get a post at Leeds Metropolitan University teaching adults with a learning disability advocacy and social skills, and also an appreciation of music.
Prior to joining the Avalon Group in 2003 Keith set up and managed the Harrogate and District Self Advocacy Scheme which enabled people with disabilities, people with mental health difficulties, older people and physically disabled people to have their voices heard.
His work at The Avalon Group represents a continuation of his work in this area, setting up the Inclusion Department and ensuring the people Avalon supports are included in the planning and management of the organisation. The enterprises have provided a model for future businesses, working in partnership with other organisations, and using volunteers to complement paid staff.
