Denise lost her sight in 1972 when she was 18 years old. She was introduced to sport and discovered that she had a gift for the throwing events. Since then she has never looked back; she has competed in 4 European Championships, a World Championship and 2 Paralympics Games. Along the way she has won a number of medals including a Paralympics Gold in the Discus and Silver in the Shot Put.
Since finishing her career in athletics she has gone on to pursue her other passions; promoting the rights of people with disabilities, and motivational speaking. Denise travels the country speaking for groups such as the Women’s Institute, Probus, Zakland Ladies, Conservative Ladies, and Guide Dogs, as well as visiting schools. She has also gained a degree in accountancy.
Denise currently works with a number of organisations to help promote the rights of, and serve as a mentor to, people with learning difficulties, physical disabilities or mental health needs. She has worked with Mind, Stockton Council, North Yorkshire County Council, Tristar Housing Association, and Action for Blind People. She also works with the Royal Institute for the Blind on their steering committee for the 2012 Olympics.
Denise has received support from The Avalon Group for the last 5 years. She is involved in our Organisational Development Committee and our Strategic Customer Committee; Avalink. Her work is invaluable in helping to ensure that The Avalon Group continues to reflect the needs and preferences of the people it supports.
