Awards success for Teesside  Support Worker

Andrew Cole, a Support Worker based at our Teesside locality, has been named the Dementia Carer of the Year at the North East Finals of the Great British Care Awards.

The awards, which recognise best practice and extraordinary effort across the care industry saw Andrew nominated for his outstanding work providing personalised care and support to our customer Phil, who has been living with dementia since 2012.

Andrew’s support has included helping Phil to maintain his art skills, singing with him at a local choir group, and attending his son’s wedding when it was thought that his care needs would have made this impossible.

Avalon CEO Larry Hollando said “We are elated beyond words to see Andrew recognised for his truly person-centred work. It is proof that putting the people we support at the heart of everything we do makes all the difference to their lives. Andrew’s support provides what is wanted and needed, and so much more besides.”

Andrew said “It’s been an honour and privilege to support Phil. With dementia it’s so important to get to know everything you can about who the person is and who they used to be, and to know their family too.  Once you know everything about a person, providing their support becomes sort of obvious, so that it’s not a job, it’s like helping out a friend.”

This award comes hot on the heels of Andrew being awarded Support Worker of the Year at our annual conference, and is proof that Avalonians really do go above and beyond help customers to live fulfilling lives.
