Shared Lives Week in York
17th to 23rd June 2017 was National Shared Lives Week, and here at The Avalon Group we had a special milestone to celebrate. After some succesful recruitment campaigns and the word about Shared Lives spreading through the city, we recently welcomed our 50th carer to York. This makes the scheme one of the largest in the UK, providing support to 60 people across York.
We held a celebration event at St Aelred's Community Centre, which is a stunning venue. There were over 50 people in attendence, including many of our local carers and customers, our York team and some special guests in the form of York Director of Adult Social Care Martin Farran, and Shared Lives Plus CEO Alex Fox OBE.
We showed a special video, a brilliant slideshow including some York memories from recent years, and had speeches from our attending VIPs. We also had a panel interview with some local carers (Sarah, Helen and Jack) and a customer called Scott, who gave moving accounts of their lives as Shared Lives families. This was very much the highlight of the event as it showed the power of Shared Lives to transform lives whilst promoting inclusion and community spirit.
Our 50th Carer
After the speeches we presented a special certificate to our 50th carer, Lisa Gunnee, who we welcomed to the Avalon family. It was noted by our CEO Larry Hollando that we hope to see our 100th carer being celebrated in a similar way in the near future as the service grows from strength to strength.
A Great Day
All in all we had a wonderful day, which was topped off with a celebratory lunch, during which everyone chatted and exchanged stories. Just like Shared Lives itself, the event brought people together in mutual admiration of their achievements. So thank you to all who came and made it so special.
