Shared Lives at Botton
Welcome to Botton Village, a purpose built community nestled in an idyllic valley on the Yorkshire Moors, and just a stone's throw from the coast. Within this community of over 60 houses, our Shared Lives service provides support to carers and customers accross the village.
What is Shared Lives?
In Shared Lives, trained carers open their homes to provide support either long or short term to adults with disabilities or mental health needs. What makes the service so unique in Botton is that there are lots of Shared Lives houses in the same place, and so families not only share their lives with each other, but with their neighbours and the rest of the community.
A unique community
This has come about as a result of the Esk Valley Camphill Community (EVCC) and The Avalon Group working together to develop Shared Lives in Botton, and provide safe, family support to people with learning disabilities who live there.
We are committed to providing a warm, stable home life for people with support and care needs, in the context of a community motivated by the social idealism of the worldwide Camphill movement.
Tell me more
The community is made up of carers and people with care and support needs who live with them and share in their community life. It consists of thirteen Shared Lives households, composed of six to seven people who are registered with Avalon as Shared Lives carers or customers.
It is a place where people can learn and grow together, and where people with disabilities live fulfilling lives as valued, integral members of the community. This means that everybody works together and grows together.
The community also runs several social enterprises including a community garden, health food shop and craft workshop. These provide work opportunities for community members.
The essential truth of life in Botton is togetherness, and of drawing strength from one another to create something bigger than the sum of its parts. It is a place that epitomises the idea of family.
