Harrogate

Our services

In Harrogate we support a huge range of customers through our services of Shared Lives, community support and supported living.

It’s quite a big locality, covering all of Harrogate and extending to Knaresborough and Ripon. We’re a really close team and our superpower is our communication – we start the day with a morning briefing call, set out our priorities for the day, and check in with each other to see how we’re getting on.

We’re really passionate about inclusivity in Harrogate and we do all we can to make sure our customers feel welcome in the office, and hosting a lot of fun social events for everyone to take part in.

Meet the team

Lisa Fletcher

Regional Operations Director – Northallerton, Harrogate & Teesside

I have worked for the Avalon Group for a long time, and here I’ve had the opportunity to work with many like-minded people who have a passion to support people.

I love that The Avalon Group is like a family, where all staff and carers are treated with respect, and supported to achieve their full potential so that quality services are at the forefront of everything we do.

There have been many achievements that I am particularly proud of during my career, but I have two that really stand out. Attending the Great British Care Awards after being nominated for ‘Best Team’ was a huge achievement and it was lovely to see the team celebrate at the National Railway Museum.

Cain Tichareva

Service Manager – Harrogate

My name is Cain Tichareva. I am Service Manager at The Avalon group in Harrogate. I joined The Avalon Group in July of 2020. I have now settled in my role, and I enjoy it immensely.

I have recently qualified as a Mental Health First Aider for the Harrogate Locality.

Having worked in a care home environment for more than ten years, joining Avalon has made me realise how important it is for people who need care to be in their own home where possible to give them more independence and for them not to feel institutionalised.

Spending time with my family is important to me. We make sure we have days where we can have breakfast and supper together as a family, especially weekends. This gives us time to have a catch up about what has happened in the past week.

In my spare time I repair laptops which I buy from auction sites. I have always been interested in electronics and I enjoy repairing broken electronic gadgets.

Stacy Donnelly

Support Co-ordinator, Harrgoate

After my great grandmother died in 1995 I decided to work hard at school and get my grades to become a nurse on the rehab/stroke unit. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the grades I needed so after I left school I applied to be a care assistant at Harrogate Hospital. I worked there for a few years. I then went on to The Granby to work, where I qualified in level 2 NVQ.

Due to personal reasons I left in 2006 to become a landlady of a social club for 6 years. I loved my time there but I missed the care side of things. That’s when I decided to join Avalon Group. I applied never working with adults with disabilities I was very nervous but I completely overwhelmed by on how much I loved it and the customers were so welcoming. Now, nearly seven years on I’ve completed my NVQ level three.

Out side of Avalon I love to spend time with my family I have 4 nephew under 4 they are all little characters who I love deeply. I love to bake cakes and biscuits. Up until recently I have self taught myself to cross stitch. I love walking and meeting up with friends and of course a good game of rugby league I’m a bit of a Leeds Rhinos fan.

This year alone has taught me grab life with both hands as in a blink of an eye it can be taken away.

Our culture

The first thing you’ll notice when you visit us is the incredible greeting you’ll get from Lorraine at the front desk. Her sing-song voice is the perfect welcome each morning.

We’re a really chatty team and we try to keep things quite light-hearted and fun when we can. Our office is full of customer creations, and we have a very special photo wall that we keep updated to help remind us why we do what we do.

It’s a tradition here in Harrogate to get dressed up for Halloween and to include as many customers as we can in these special events. Because we’re based in the main office, you’ll sometimes score some leftovers from a big meeting or you can wait for the daily honk of the local coffee and sandwich man to enjoy your lunch with your teammates.

We’re a really open culture and if you’re wanting to join Avalon, you should feel confident knowing that you’ll be joining a place where you’ll be supported to achieve incredible things at work.

Come and see us

Our Harrogate office is in a business park just off Skipton Road. It’s quite a narrow street when you first turn off, and then you take the first left right down the end where you’ll find our building the last on the right.

If you’re visiting us, you can pop in through the front door by ringing the buzzer and we’re located at the back of the building on the ground level.

We look forward to seeing you!

Chris Harrison

Service Manager – York

I’m Chris Harrison, and I’m a Service Manager here in York.

I’ve been with Avalon since 2019, and I’ve very much enjoyed the experience of working for the charity.

I’ve been working with people with learning disabilities for almost 20 years, and mental health support is one of my greatest interests. My main passions in my role are helping our customers to feel empowered and content – to live their life the best they can-their way. I believe we do this by really getting to know our customers, and matching their support with their ever-changing needs.

When I’m not at work I love spending time with my family, sports and following my beloved Leeds United.

Michelle Jenkinson

Administrator – York

Hi, I’m Tracy McGaw and I  work as a Shared Lives Service Manager, and also manage a small caseload on Supported Living. I started working for Avalon in 2016 but I have worked in the health and social care sector now for the last 15 years.

Prior to working with Avalon, my background was in supported living and community support so Shared Lives was all new to me, but I am so pleased I took on the challenge, as I absolutely love it! It is so rewarding being able to provide a break, short/long term or emergency placement which is a home from home environment and is so much more person centred. My experience over the years has mostly been supporting adults with learning disabilities, autism, sensory needs, health issues and behaviours of concern but I also have two children of my own who are diagnosed with autism.

I am very passionate about making a positive difference to the lives of others and although my role as a manager allows me to do this, I still try to cover support shifts where I can so I can maintain the direct contact and support with our customers as this is something I thoroughly enjoy and don’t want to lose sight of. Mental health is also very close to my heart and when the opportunity came up to train as a mental health first aider a few years ago, I jumped at the chance!

When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my family and extended family which also includes our array of pets. I am also very creative so to fulfil this passion, I will quite often have some kind of art or craft project on the go! I am also a keen advocate for autism support and acceptance, so I am involved in a school autism parent support group. My aim is to use my experiences in a positive way, being there and supporting others in similar situations but also to help raise awareness and understanding amongst parents and teaching staff, as autism is still very much misunderstood.

I have more than 30 years experience in social care work and I have a Diploma of Higher Education in Youth and community work – I am really passionate about continually learning and that’s something I know Avalon really supports.

Outside of work I have lots of interests including; cooking, walking, swimming, travelling, rugby and socialising. I enjoy going to gigs and watching films – and these are lots of things I like to do with our customers, too.

I have never worked in Care before; however I wish I had done this years ago, I absolutely love all our customers they often call me for a chat or pop in the office for a cuppa. I think Avalon are doing a fantastic job with the customers everyone goes above and beyond and its really rewarding to see them grow in confidence and become more independent.

Outside work, I am usually found walking with my two Jack Russell’s, I also spend a lot of time with my mum and my granddaughters, friends and neighbours (we have the best street, we all get together and  have street parties even in winter). I also like reading, knitting, crocheting, grooming my dogs and gardening.

I work across three projects, including: supported living, shared housing and Shared Lives.

I’m passionate about supporting others to achieve their true potential and to fight against prejudice and discrimination.

When I am not working, I love spending time with my family (this includes dogs and cats etc).  I spend most of time working and being ‘mum’s taxi, however when I do get time I enjoy being with my friends or exercising, which includes going to adult sessions at Jump inc. and kickboxing – PS I refused to grow up!

Carol Clark

Service Manager – Doncaster

Hi, I’m Carol Clark. I’m a service manager working on the Shared Lives service at Doncaster. I’ve worked for Avalon since January 2020 and I have more than 40 years experience in the Criminal Justice System and Social Care fields.

I’ve been a Probation Officer working in prisons, courts and in the community and I have seen many changes over the years.  In 2010 I changed direction after being made redundant as a Probation Officer/Policy and Practice Manager and became a Social Worker in Leeds Local Authority working in the Shared Lives team. I saw quite a change in approach and was blown away by the way customers, carers and family carers benefited from such a wonderful selfless act of caring.

I have a Diploma in Social Work and a CQSW as well as a Certificate in Business Management. I believe in leading from the front and doing what I say I will do. I believe passionately that everyone has something to give and with support can achieve their goals and dreams.

When I’m not working, I am passionate about everything golf. I am my Golf Club’s Welfare Officer, and volunteer with the Junior section. I play to a reasonable level and enjoy watching key Professional tournaments. I had the honour of being chosen to be Lady Captain in 2016. It gives me joy, keeps me relatively fit, instils in me a keen sense of competitiveness and provides me with a fabulous social life.

Skipton

Our services

Our main services in Skipton are supported living and community support. Supported living is the service we’re probably most famous for – we plan lots of fun outings and we help our customers build really strong social networks, encouraging them to become an important part of their local communities.

Our amazing customers and staff live all across the area, and come from all walks of life.

You’ll find us supporting people within Skipton, across the Yorkshire Dales and in the surrounding communities.

We love working in the area not only because of our incredible customers, but because we get to some some of the most beautiful scenery in the UK while out and about.

The logistics of the locality is also one of our biggest challenges. It’s a big, rural area and it can mean a lot of travel. And while the area is large, the population isn’t – so recruiting the right people to take the best care of our customers is always something we’re working hard to get right.

Hi, I am Joanne Thompson. I’m the Regional Director in Skipton & West Yorkshire. I’ve been working in social care for 20 years and at Avalon for three years.

I really enjoy the work we do and the difference we make to the lives of our customers and their families. Working in social care has also given me many opportunities in my personal development which has led me to build my career into management roles.

In my spare time I enjoy being with my family and friends, playing netball and traveling.

Lucy Price

Locality Manager – Skipton

Hi I’m Lucy, I am a Service Manager in Skipton and the longest standing member of the team, having been with Avalon since 2008.

Before I worked for Avalon I trained as a nursery nurse but mainly worked as a private nanny. I then went on to have my three children before starting with Avalon. My first position was as support worker. I’ve been really lucky to have opportunities to learn and grow with Avalon, progressing to support co-ordinator and then six months later to service manager.

I love spending time with our customers and still do that alongside my manger role any chance I get. I run an ‘out and about group’ where we all meet socially to do lots of different activities. I’ve planned at least ten different holidays with groups of customers or individuals and I’ve been on many with them. I love to see people enjoying themselves, and in the holiday setting they have so much fun.

When I’m not working, I enjoy cooking and especially baking. I also do a lot of swimming and just lately wild swimming; I have recently done an outdoor swim in November. I only stay in roughly ten minutes but definitely feel alive when I have got out. My aim is to be still doing them in December and do one on Christmas Day!

Tracey Farebrother

Service Manager – Skipton

Hi, I’m Tracey, I am a Service Manager in Skipton. I started my career with Avalon in 2015 as a support worker, and moved on to support coordinator before taking on the management position I’m in today.

I love having opportunities to complete training and grow and develop my career, recently through Avalon I’ve become a Mental Health First Aider – mental health and supporting my team is something I really care about.

I have a passion for people, supporting them to live their best lives and have opportunities just like you or I. I’m a great believer in teamwork, working together and supporting each other and a firm believer in laughter to get through the trickier times, along with great biscuits and coffee.

When I’m not working I love to watch films, especially Marvel (I am a bit of a geek). I also love cooking and spending time with my now grown up children.

When you visit us in Skipton, the first thing you’ll notice is the warm welcome of our incredible admin support Helena. If her warm smile and offers for tea and coffee don’t have you feeling happy, then the laugh and energy of our very own Service Manager, Lucy Price will soon have you smiling.

We go the extra mile each and every day for our customers. We’re a great team and we support each other to make sure everyone feels like they can achieve their goals. We’re really lucky because we often have visits from lots of our customers, who really are part of our family.

Every year we take our customers to Blackpool Illuminations. We all look forward to it and it’s so rewarding to see our customers get the chance to experience the things that we may take for granted in our daily lives.

Our Skipton office can be a little bit tricky to spot as it’s tucked behind a building. We’re found on the High Street – so right in the heart of the community.

To find us, you’ll need to head to the library and enter a little ginnel between it and Harry Garlic electricals. We’re set back there, just behind the electrical shop.

Sarah Gazzard

Locality Manager – Northallerton

I started my career for The Avalon Group as a support worker in 2004. Little did I know at that time that attending the induction on my 21st birthday would be the most beneficial birthday present I have ever had. Since then I have worked my way up every step of the career ladder to my current position of Northallerton Locality Manager.

I am passionate about the customers we support and the Avalon group ethos. This drives me in my daily work and I take pleasure in seeing our customers achieve and excel in their personal wishes and outcomes.

I enjoy working for Avalon Group and the way the organisation allows people to grow and use their initiative whilst always knowing that there is someone available for advice and guidance when needed. This works for both customers and employees; no-one is ever truly alone within  Avalon Group.

I have two beautiful boys and love having family time, during which we visit lots of different places and have adventures together. When I do get some completely free time for myself I enjoy doing Zumba to keep fit and decorating cakes, which I find very relaxing.

Anna Broadley

Service Manager – Northallerton

Hello, I’m Anna Broadley, Service Manager for Avalon Northallerton. Since graduating at university (a lot of years ago) I’ve spent the majority of my career working at day services providing horticultural activities.

Kerri Durrant

Service Manager – Teesside

Hi, my name is Kerri Durant, I began working at Avalon in January 2019. I quickly progressed in my role to become Support Coordinator, and now I am a Service Manager at Teesside. I chose to progress my career at Avalon, because I admire Avalon’s values, and the importance of delivering person-centred care, tailoring each care package to best meet the individual customer support needs and wishes. Avalon has a great training programme, and very supportive teams and management. This has meant I have been able to quickly develop my skills, knowledge, and progress well in my chosen career in care.

I love my job at Avalon and find that no two days are ever the same! My strengths are supporting customers with mental health support needs, and I have a good understanding of Autism. I am passionate about advocating for our customer’s and ensuring they have the right support to remain in their own homes and remain valued members of our community.

Claire Evans

Service Manager – Teesside

Hi my name is Claire Evans. 18 years ago I was a stay at home single mum of a daughter with learning disabilities who had just started school and was desperate to come back to work. I saw this little advert in the paper asking ‘could you spare a few hours a week’ and thought to myself ‘I could do that’ this started my journey with Avalon Group as a support worker.

I got asked a few times to apply to become a support co-ordinator but I loved my role as a support worker. I took the plunge in 2018 and took on the role of a Support Co-ordinator which resulted in a short period of time of taking on a Service Manager role, managing our Shared Lives Service and Dementia Service. I have had many opportunities within the company gaining qualifications and endless amount of training courses.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends either going out (mainly for food!) or staying in. I always used to be embarrassed to admit to this growing up as I play in a Brass Band but now I’m actually quite proud of it

Bev Rowland

Administrator – Teesside

I have worked as an Administrator for Avalon Teesside since 2006, when we had just recently moved into our office on the ground floor of Lysander House.  The building had just been finished and the business park was still a building site.  During that time I have seen a lot of changes and have worked to help bring some of them about. I enjoy being part of a busy and friendly office, with reception duties as well as all the usual admin tasks.  No two days are the same and we are used to changing what we need to do at short notice. Covid has certainly changed things and I have taken on the organisation of our test kits and PPE supplies here at the office.

I enjoy spending time with friends and family, reading and watching my favourite tv programmes, especially The Great British Bake Off, Strictly Come Dancing, or a detective series.

Scarborough

Our services

In Scarborough we offer our customers support through Shared Lives, supported living and community support. We have a huge range of customers all with different needs, and they’re at the heart of everything we do.

Scarborough is one of Avalon’s bigger localities, and we cover a large geographical area. We’re a really busy team, but we look at every day like a positive challenge. We’re lucky to be able to work and live so close to the wonderful North Yorkshire coast and some of our favourite days include taking walks down by the beach with our incredible customers.

In the summer, the influx of visitors means travelling around the area to support customers can become challenging, but one thing that we before anything else is the safety and care of our customers – and that comes with our dedication to strict PPE compliance and training.

Duncan Scott

Service Manager – Scarborough and Botton

Hi, I’m Duncan and I’m a service manager in both Scarborough and Botton.

I graduated from the University of Stirling with a BA with Honours in History followed by an MSc in Environment, Heritage and Policy. I then worked from Historic Environment Scotland and the National Railway Museum, before studying for a PGCE in Secondary History at Sheffield Hallam University.

Working with children with special educational needs and disabilities encouraged me to apply for the role of Support Co-ordinator with Avalon in York.

Less than a year later I undertook a two-month secondment to assist in the Skipton locality where I expanded my role as a Support Coordinator to encompass the role of Service Manager.

This experience added to my success in securing a full-time position as Service Manager at Scarborough and Botton Village. I enjoy working with people, I find my role fulfilling, and the North Yorkshire Moors are a beautiful place to work.

Amy Pawley

Service Manager – Shared Lives

Hi, my name is Amy Pawley and I am a service manager in Scarborough.

I left school and worked in Germany at a riding centre for the MOD. I then returned to the UK, and after a few jobs started my career in health and social care.

I worked in a Dementia care home as a carer firstly. I then worked for Salisbury District Hospital in their spinal unit as a nursing assistant. This was an amazing experience working in rehabilitation. I started working for Hampshire county council in 2014 as a residential support worker in a specialised respite unit for learning disabilities and physical disabilities.

I knew this was my calling and loved the varied work I could do with the customers. I took some time out from care to run a business with my partner. When covid-19 hit, I took the decision that I wanted to return to care industry, we sold the business and I became a team leader in supported living. My partner became a shared lives carer and that’s when I heard of the role as a service manager with Avalon.

In my spare time I love to go out with my dog and have started breeding sheep!

I’m also a photographer in my spare time and lend my hand to creating things like calendars for Avalon when I can.

West Yorkshire

Our services

Our main service in West Yorkshire is supported living – where pop into our customer’s homes and help them with things like personal care, cooking, cleaning and all sorts of activities to live more independent and fulfilling lives.

We are really dynamic as a team, which is lucky because the work we do is always changing. Our superpower as a locality is that we are all very good adapting to meet the needs of our customers. And just like all of Avalon, our customers are the most important part of what we do.

We work across a really big area, with customers in Wakefield, Kirklees and Huddersfield. Because we cover such a large geographic area, travelling across the locality to provide support is one of the biggest challenges we face. But we work really hard to make sure we keep communicating to be flexible for the needs of our customers. We’re always looking to add new members of staff to our team, and recruiting the right people to our locality is high on our agenda.
