Support Worker, York

Start a fulfilling new career with skills you already have!

The Avalon Group is a local charity providing support to adults with varying ability levels in the community, helping them to live fulfilling lives every day. To do this we need people who are enthusiastic about using their existing skills to help others.

Maybe you are good at cooking, confident managing finances or always on the lookout for fun things to do in your local area. These are exactly the kind of things that can make you a fantastic Support Worker for Avalon.

Here are some other skills or interests we are looking for:

  • Budgeting
  • Meal preparation
  • Running a home
  • Attending local groups and clubs
  • Providing healthy lifestyle tips
  • Filling in forms
  • Making and attending appointments
  • Speaking with landlords to solve any property issues
  • Helping others understand their utilities and liaising with suppliers

Ideally you will be a car driver with access to a vehicle to use for work purposes as you may be supporting this customer outside of their home environment to access activities of their choice. You may be required to support customers with some personal care needs.

Of course there are other elements involved in becoming a Support Worker. Our award winning in-house training team will ensure that you learn all the additional skills you need to deliver the role with confidence, so that no previous experience working in social care is necessary.

We have Full and Part-time Support Worker roles available right now, in York and the surrounding areas which all offer great benefits. If you’ve come this far keep on reading!

Who are we?

We are an award-winning charity providing support to a wide range of individuals including those with learning and/or physical disabilities, dementia or mental health problems. We pride ourselves on spending quality time with our customers and do not undertake 15 minute calls.

What does the role involve?

Our current rate for customer contact time is £8.31 per hour with further enhancements paid for weekends and Bank Holidays, and we pay a generous rate for sleepover shifts.

As a Support Worker you will listen to our customers, what they want to do and what they want to achieve. We are not a residential care provider and your approach will be specifically tailored to the person you are supporting, working towards their goals and aspirations. Some personal care will be involved. You will build a great relationship with the people you support, and will see the difference you make to their lives on a daily basis.

Please note that we do have some sleep-in shifts, though these are not mandatory, and you can elect to cover these shifts if desirable to you. Sleep-in shifts will be paid at an enhanced rate.

There may also be some weekend work involved for these roles, to meet the support needs of our customers.

Who can apply?

Anybody! You don’t need experience, just the drive and compassion to help our customers to live great lives. Being a car driver is a bonus, but if that’s not you don’t worry, get in touch and we’ll help get you started in your new fulfilling career.

These roles would suit people of all ages including people who may be looking for part time work in retirement.

Why work for us?

As an Avalon employee you will get exclusive access to discounts at high street retailers such as Boots, M&S and Sports Direct. You will also be able to join an employee assistance scheme, which is a 24/7 advice service giving you impartial guidance regarding any personal matters or concerns you may have.

We are an award winning charity, offering fantastic paid training and the opportunity to develop your career by gaining a Health and Social Care qualification along with progression opportunities within the group. We pay your travel expenses between consecutive sessions of support and we even cover the cost of your Enhanced Disclosure and Barring (DBS) Certificate (which you need to be able to work in social care).
